Winter Reading Recommendations + A Debate!

Hi, Bookmarked subscribers!

If you're anything like me, you're both loving and despising this new, colder weather. Personally, I've already completely decorated my home for Christmas and embraced the fact that winter is practically here. I know some people absolutely insist on waiting until after Thanksgiving to put up Christmas trees, but I've always been a November 1st kind of gal!

What do you think? Are you a "wait until after Thanksgiving" purist, or do you embrace the holidays as soon as Halloween ends?

When is it acceptable to start decorating for Christmas?

  • November 1st!

  • Somewhere in the middle of November

  • Not until after Thanksgiving

  • December 1st

Well, regardless of your preferences, I hope everyone can at least get some joy or satisfaction from the drop in temperatures!

Today, I want to turn your attention to a collection of short stories written by local authors called "Snowy Trails," which can be purchased online here or at Books & Gifts!

With each story set in the Appalachian region, "Snowy Trails: A Short Story Collection" presents a strong sense of place and belonging. Noted authors have contributed stories capturing trials, tribulations, and triumphs, each one sprinkled with a gamut of emotions. In "Snowy Trails," readers will be immersed in the varietal settings and characters of the stories and will undoubtedly share the feelings of heartache in challenges and the joys of survival.

It's the perfect winter read as we enter into this new season!

Finally, I want to bring up a debate that is growing more and more prevalent in the book publishing industry. It is a very current topic that I'd love to hear your opinion on!

The news broke recently that the Department of Justice is blocking the Penguin Random House purchase of Big Five rival Simon & Schuster. You can read about it in the New York Times article here. The question is, would this merging have been bad for authors and the overall book publishing landscape? Should we allow certain companies to have a monopoly over book publishing?

You can share your thoughts in the comment section below for a more in-depth response, but I'll also create a poll if you'd like to share your opinion more anonymously.

Would a merging of book publishing companies be a good or bad thing overall?

  • Good!

  • I can see pros and cons, but overall good.

  • Bad!

  • I can see pros and cons, but overall bad.

Well, I hope everyone has a lovely rest of your week, and don't forget to check back with us next Thursday for another post.

ALSO, please come to Books & Gifts' Christmas Open House on Dec. 3rd! We'll have refreshments, giveaways, and discounts! You can check our All Events page here for more information or visit my recent blog post about the event.
